Limitless (2011)
With his writing career dragging and his girlfriend casting him off, Eddie Morra's life turns around when he takes a drug that provides astonishing mental focus -- but its deadly side effects threaten his future.
Most of what I saw surrounding this film screamed entertaining trash. It looked like it a decent synopsis going for it, but the presentation of the trailer made it seem like it was going to be hindered by a back and forth battle between Eddie and Carl for control of the drug that let you access 100% of your mind. The problem there is with De Niro; I just cannot buy him as a vicious character anymore after his recent stretch of mediocre films.
Surprisingly I got something I never really expected. A smart thriller that while never elevating to greatness stays consistently good throughout its entire runtime. The power struggle did come; just it arrived at the end and with a different character. It is a film that throws little twists at you that keeps the story flowing and your mind from wandering. Every time I thought I thought I knew where the story was headed, it seemed to deviate from the projection. I was really impressed they did it so consistently without making a mess of the plot. The famous Spiderman quote, “With great power comes great responsibility” seems to fit in perfectly with what the film tries to accomplish. Here is a man that wants to do great things with this drug, but may have to do unethical things to get in a position where he can accomplish these goals of his. As his journey furthers onward, you begin to wonder whether you’re actually watching the good guy, or just a villain shown in a positive nature. Up until the very end, that question still lingers in your head, leaving you with a wickedly cool ending that goes against the norm.
This was Bradley Cooper’s first role where the camera focused only on him rather than a group of men. I’d say he passed with a pretty impressive debut. He has a natural cockiness to him that suits the roles he takes on, and more specifically, the character of Eddie Morra. He seems to be more than just a face, and an actual actor that if he continues making thriller/comedies, should have no trouble keeping this momentum swing he has going for him. The thing that is great about his character that normally in Hollywood films the lead character learns a lesson by the end, here it seems like he just got cockier by the end. One of the many reasons it surprised me so much. Robert De Niro despite being showcased in the trailer barely makes an appearance. It is quite amazing, as talented as he once was, he can have such a forgettable role. Age and role choices have dampened his respectability.
Limitless is a fun good time that is entertaining all the way through. If the trailer had you in doubts, you can forgot about them, if it intrigued you, you’re in for a treat as well. This was a surprise hit that stands out maybe more than it should since the year got off to a slow start, but over the course of the last four weeks, 2011 has really picked up, and Limitless is a shining example on why it has. It has an original story, with a enjoyable character, and lets you interrupt the ending. The film ends pretty sweet, but was it ethically right? That is for you to decide.
Overall Score 7/10
